The clip shows the rats inhabiting the Karni Mata temple, also known as the “Temple of Rats,” located in the city of Deshnoke, India. The rats are considered sacred and treated with utmost care by devotees.

“This temple is inhabited by around 20,000 rats, which are fed by members of the extensive Depavat family. It is said that eating the leftovers of rat food brings good luck to those who visit the temple,” says the caption shared along with the video.

“Devotees have other reasons to keep the rats safe and happy: according to the temple’s law, if a rat dies accidentally, then it must be replaced by a rat made of silver or gold,” the caption further states.

The video, shared in early January on Instagram, has already amassed nearly 6 million views, along with over 36,000 likes and 11,000 comments from internet users who were shocked by the unusual scene.

“And that’s why there are so many problems with diseases there,” said one Instagram user. “They love rats, cows, stones, but not God,” commented another. “The filthiness of this place is almost diabolical,” lamented a third internet user.
